Saturday Night Main Event
The Dinner by Jay Kirschenmann
There were a lot of kids in our class. In 1975, Central High School had 423 students registered for our senior year.
We joked at the reunion about next time making the name typeface REALLY BIG on the name tags! There were 114 classmates at the reunion, and about 45 guests/spouses/significant others.
We all had our circle of friends back in high school, but 50 years later it’s fun to get to know some of the hundreds of other students who we might not have had much or any contact with.
Saturday night, after the memorial video honoring classmates who are no longer with us, we switched on the roaming wireless mic. Hearing stories from our classmates was outstanding.
Gregg Poe broke the long silence after the video to tell us about a key incident leading to getting together with the girl who would become his wife, the late Kathy Swenson, a classmate on screen moments before. It’s a great story involving his graduation cap tassel — ask him about it sometime.
Dale McCrea Sr. told about the continuing support he got from a coach when he became a young father, perhaps the first parent in our class.
Kurt Lovrien had us laughing with his story about driving around Aberdeen in his brother’s Model A, with period hats for friends. Thinking it would be funny to complete the look with gangster props, they purchased long black squirt guns. Police spotted them and thought there were real guns — they got pulled over by a couple of Aberdeen‘s finest…
During the trivia question portion, regarding the senior lounge, Gregg read a funny poem by a classmate regarding a “mooning” incident from the lounge window.
Unexpectedly, Rod Wolforth stood and expanded on the story with hilarious detail, and confessed to the mooning, solving the 50-year mystery… and the secret kept by Bill Sauck for 50 years.
Until next time, enjoy your many other memories from our 50th reunion, and keep in touch with people you became reacquainted with!
